In January 2010, the global rig count was revised to include rigs that were previously considered unavailable to Western oilfield suppliers. This revision impacts the rig count totals for Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Japan, and Myanmar. Prior to January 2010, the rig counts exclude rigs that were considered unavailable to Western oilfield suppliers, as this category of rigs was not captured by the M-I SWACO field reporting system. Also reflected in the restatement is a reclassification of workover rigs in Algeria and Abu Dhabi where these rigs were previously included in the drilling rig count due to definitional differences in these countries; these rigs will no longer be included in the drilling rig count.
