The M-I SWACO global rig count tracks industry-wide rigs engaged in drilling and related operations, which include drilling, logging, cementing, coring, well testing, fishing, waiting on weather, running casing and blowout preventer (BOP) testing. It does not include rigs engaged in workover operations.
M-I SWACO Worldwide Rig Count*
The worldwide rig count is the sum of the average of the weekly US & Canada rig counts for the calendar month plus the rigs active in the rest of the world. The Worldwide rig count is published the second week of each month reflecting the previous month's data.
The Worldwide Rig Count is tabulated monthly on a per country basis. A rig is included in the count if:
- It is engaged in drilling and related operations on the day of the count, or
- It is in transit to a location where it will commence drilling and related operations immediately upon arrival, or
- It performed drilling and related operations for more than 15 days of the previous month.
Unlike the US & Canada Rig Count, the Worldwide Rig Count may include completion activities if the rig continues directly from drilling and related operations to completion operations after reaching total depth (TD). Workover activities are explicitly excluded.
The rig count does not indicate the level or presence of M-I SWACO activity in any area or country.
M-I SWACO US & Canada Rig Count
The US & Canada Rig Count is published weekly on Tuesday, reflecting the previous week's data. A rig is included in the count if it is engaged in drilling and related operations. Workover and completion activities are explicitly excluded.
* In January 2010, the global rig count was revised to include rigs that were previously considered unavailable to Western oilfield suppliers. This revision impacts the rig count totals for Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Japan, and Myanmar. Prior to January 2010, the rig counts exclude rigs that were considered unavailable to Western oilfield suppliers, as this category of rigs was not captured by M-I SWACO's field reporting system. Also reflected in the restatement is a reclassification of workover rigs in Algeria and Abu Dhabi where these rigs were previously included in the drilling rig count due to definitional differences in these countries; these rigs will no longer be included in the drilling rig count.
