Until recently, drilling and completing certain types of reservoirs presented operators with a dilemma. On one side of the problem, technical, geological and economic considerations required an oil- or synthetic-base reservoir drill-in fluid. Unfortunately, drilling a reservoir with a conventional invert emulsion not only makes certain sand-control completions much more difficult, but oil-wet filtercakes can be extremely costly and time-consuming to clean up thoroughly.

On the other side of the problem, while a water-base system makes it much easier to clean up the filtercake, it may be incapable of inhibiting water-reactive shales and clays, thus compromising drilling efficiency.

So, at the end of the day, a tough, costly and often inadequate completion cancels out fast and efficient reservoir drilling.
